Module-2 : Architecture
EVC: Ethernet Virtual Connection
UNI: User Network Interface. The physical demarcation point between the responsibility of the Service Provider and the responsibility of the Subscriber
UNI-C: UNI customer-side processes
UNI-N UNI network-side processes
ENNI: External Network to Network Interface; the physical demarcation point between the responsibility of the two Service Providers
ENNI-N: ENNI Processes
Module-3: 3 layers- details
APP, ETH and TRAN – Application service, Ethenet Service and Transportation Service
Module-4 : Getting Familiar with Terminology
The User Network Interface (UNI)
Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC)
Service container
Connects two or more subscriber sites (UNI’s)
An association of two or more UNIs
Prevents data transfer between sites that are not part of the same EVC
Three types of EVCs
Point-to- Point
Multipoint-to- Multipoint
Rooted Multipoint
Can be bundled or multiplexed on the same UNI
Defined in MEF 10.2 technical specification
Module -5 : Terminology- 2
UNI Type I
A UNI compliant with MEF 13
Manually Configurable
UNI Type II
Supports E-Tree
Support service OAM, link protection
Automatically Configurable via E-LMI
Manageable via OAM
Network to Network Interface (NNI)
Network to Network Interface between distinct MEN operated by one or more carriers
An active project of the MEF
Metro Ethernet Network (MEN)
An Ethernet transport network connecting user end-points (Expanded to Access and Global networks in addition to the original Metro Network meaning)
Module-6 & 7 ( 4 hours) : Service Type
E-Line Service Type for
Virtual Private Lines (EVPL)
Ethernet Private Lines (EPL)
Ethernet Internet Access
E-LAN Service Type for
Multipoint L2 VPNs
Transparent LAN Service
Multicast networks
E-Tree Service Type for
Rooted multi-point L2 VPNs
Broadcast networks
Telemetry networks
E- Access Service Type* for
Wholesale Access Services
Access EPL
Access EVPL
Module-8 : Service Attributes :
EVC Service Attributes (Defined in MEF 10.2)
Fundamentals of enabling the value of Carrier Ethernet:
Virtual Connections
Bandwidth profiles
Class of Service Identification
Service Performance
Frame Delay (Latency)
Inter Frame Delay Variation
Frame Loss Ratio
Availability
UNI Service Attributes
Details regarding the UNI including:
Physical interface capabilities
Service multiplexing capability
C-VLAN bundling capability
Module-9 : Bandwidth Profiles per EVC & per Class of Service : 6 Parameters
CIR (Committed Information Rate)
CIR defines assured bandwidth
Assured via bandwidth reservation, traffic engineering
EIR (Excess Information Rate)
EIR bandwidth is considered ‘excess’
EIR improves the network’s Goodput
Traffic dropped at congestion points in the network
CBS/EBS (Committed/Excess Burst Size in bytes)
Higher burst size results in improved performance
Color Mode (“Color Aware” or “Color Blind”)

Green – Forwarded frames – CIR conforming traffic
Yellow – Discard Eligible frames – Over CIR , within EIR
Red – Discarded frames – Exceeds EIR
Module-10 : Network and security administration :
Security issues in ETTx
ARP, ARP Spoofing
Spoofing prevention
ARP inspection
Dynamic Inspection
Port ACL
Policy based security controller
Module 11 : System maintenance activities : swapping modules, retrieveing and backup databases
EOAM
ITU-T 1731
Database management
Backup management
Data retrieval
Module management
Module- 12: preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance
Install and support Mobile Switching Centers (MSC) and Cellular Back- Haul (CBH) networks for 1200+ active cellular towers.
Understand and perform RFC-2544 and ITU-T Y.1564 circuit testing using network specific test equipment (.e.g. HST3000, T-BERD, FTB-860).
Troubleshoot and resolve network problems while complying with outlined service level agreements (SLA's). Work synonymously with business class customers, customer's IT staff, and enterprise NOC's and XOC's to quickly isolate and resolve any metro-E/CBH network issues.
Schedule and perform preventive maintenance during overnight maintenance windows to avoid or minimize impact to customer's traffic and/or any other commercial or residential product that may be affected as a result of necessary maintenance.
Understand and work with multiple technologies within complex networks to minimize the downtime that could affect customers and maximize reliability. Perform general optical fiber maintenance utilizing fiber optic test equipment including: optical scope, CWDM Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR), and Optical Spectrum Analyzer (OSA).
Module-13 : RAMON ( Remote Network Monitoring ) Alarm and event management
Statistics (RMON group 1)— Ethernet statistics (including Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet
statistics, depending on the switch type and supported interfaces) on an interface.

History (RMON group 2—Collects a history group of statistics on Ethernet ports (including Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet statistics, depending on the switch type and supported interfaces) for a specified polling interval.
Alarm (RMON group 3)— management information base (MIB) object for a specified interval, alarm at a specified value (rising threshold), and resets the alarm at another value (falling threshold). Alarms with events; the alarm triggers an event, which can generate a log entry or an SNMP trap.
Event (RMON group 9)—Specifies the action to take when an event is triggered by an alarm. The action can be to generate a log entry or an SNMP trap.
CLI & SNMP
Module-14: Connectivity and Fault management
Continuity Check : ME Level, Service Identifier, MEP Identifier, Transaction Identifier, Arbitrary data, software checksum, Port state, Layer 3 management address,Transmission time.
Traceroute -IP Traceroute, CFM Tracerout
Alarm discovery : ME Level, Service Identifier, MEP Identifier, Transaction Identifier
Loop Back : ME Level, Service Identifier, MEP Identifier, Transaction Identifier, (Optional) Arbitrary data, software checksum.
Module-15 : OAM overview
